As we move deeper into the summer, I’m pleased to share an update on the growing season here at Archery Summit. It’s been a slightly warmer season than usual, which serves as a perfect example of why the Willamette Valley is such an exceptional place for growing world-class Pinot Noir.
Over the past month we’ve experienced some notably high temperatures. In early July, we saw a high of 103 degrees Fahrenheit. However, what’s equally important to note is the dramatic diurnal shift we’re seeing—nighttime lows are dropping significantly, with temperatures of 59 to 60 degrees. Following this brief heatwave, we’ll settle back into the more temperate high 80s, with night temperatures dipping down to a cool 51°F.
This range of temperatures is what makes our region truly special. The warm days help ripen the grapes, while the cool nights preserve their acidity, leading to wines with both richness and freshness. This balance is the hallmark of our Pinot Noirs, and it’s a direct result of the unique climate of the Willamette Valley.
Reflecting on the season as a whole, we had a wet but mild winter, which left the soils with good moisture reserves. This set the stage for an early budbreak. However, a cold snap following budbreak delayed bloom, though fortunately, it wasn’t cold enough to cause any damage. The result has been a well-balanced growing season that has allowed our vines to develop at a steady pace.
At this moment, we are in the midst from veraison—the onset of ripening—and I anticipate that we’ll begin harvest in early October. This aligns perfectly with the rhythm of the season, allowing the grapes ample time to develop their full flavor potential. The clusters this year are medium to small, with an abundance of beautiful, tiny berries—promising dense, colorful, and flavorful wines ahead. These are the vintages I cherish most, filled with an abundance of character and perfect balance in the fruit.
We’re excited about what this vintage will bring and can’t wait to share the results with you. Thank you for your continued support and passion for our wines.
